Who Are We?

The Trust was formed in 2004 following two meetings of enthusiasts concerned for the future of a number of British & Irish native breeds which, it was felt, were at a low ebb of popularity. An executive committee was formed whose responsibillity was to monitor those breeds and endeavour to promote education and awareness. All members of this Trust work on a voluntary basis and many are owners and breeders of some of the breeds named on the list.

The Trust is aware that the breeds do not all have the same requirements and needs for their conservation. It is felt however that by highlighting those under the umbrella of the Trust, their future can be best served. Each breed represented has its own breed club(s) run by devotees of the breed and they are able to provide very specific information regarding their suitabillity as family pets and breed specific traits.

What Are Our Aims?

The Trust has three principle aims, Education, Preservation and Promotion.

The Trust is keen to educate potential owners and the public at large on the positive aspects of our native breeds.

By encouraging the ownership of the vulnerable breeds we hope to ensure a secure future for them.

We promote the breeds to the public who may not be aware of their existence. For example the English Toy Terrier is often mistaken for a puppy Doberman. The Lakeland, Welsh and Irish Terriers are often confused with the Airedale Terrier. If a Skye Terrier is walked down the street people simply stop and stare as they have never seen them before.

How are we going about these aims?

We acknowledge, particularly those breeds whose numbers may be perceived as having need of support to ensure their future.

We encourage the keeping of native breeds and to offer appropriate guidance to ensure their future.

We provide a forum of mutual benefit for those interested in the preservation of native breeds.
