Otter Hound

Otter Hound

The Otterhound is a large dog with a rugged appearance. He has a double coat which is harsh and waterproof as he was bred to spend much of his day in the water In addition to his waterproof coat he also has webbed feet. As his name suggests he was originally bred to hunt otter; though this is now banned. When following the scent of an otter on land it is called a drag and when in the water it is called a wash. He can follow the scent of a drag for up to 12 hours and when following a wash he can swim for up to 5 hours. The Otterhound is most certainly a dog for the energetic owner but definitely not for the house proud.
